Reverse Osmosis Desalination

Desalination is the removal of dissolved salts from water. This is done by either Reverse Osmosis (RO) or Distillation. In most applications Reverse Osmosis is the most efficient way of desalinating water.

Osmosis is a process found in all biological systems and results in water from a dilute solution passing spontaneously through a semi-permeable membrane into a more concentrated solution on the other side.

Reverse Osmosis is a process that achieves this separation of dissolved salts and impurities from a water solution by means of pressure exerted on a semi-permeable membrane. The salts are unable to pass through the membrane and are collected in a concentrated form. Treated water is known as permeate. The process can be repeated one or more times to further concentrate the brine and reduce the percentage of rejected concentrate water.

Reverse Osmosis desalination is the most technologically advanced method to purify water from a range of sources including: sea, river, mains, bore, artesian or surface. Our systems ensure the highest levels of productivity gain, equipment longevity and improved water recovery.

Filtration

Filtration removes suspended solids from water. Varies types of filtration systems are available, with selection depending on the raw water make up (particle size and distribution) and quality requirements of the product water.

Filtration is commonly used as ‘pre-treatment’ of raw water, to remove suspended solids, prior to desalination via Reverse Osmosis. Typical RO pre-treatment systems include Micro Filtration (MF), Ultra Filtration (UF) and Multi-Media and Cartridge Filtration.

Other forms of filtration are used to remove excess “hardness” (generally calcium & magnesium) which have the potential to cause scaling of plumbing and other undesired effects. Typical softening processes involve Ion Exchange, whereby calcium and magnesium ions are replaced with sodium ions, or Nano Filtration (NF).

Sterilisation / Disinfection of Potable Water

Sterilisation is a critical to ensure the safety of any Potable Water Supply.

Chlorination is a highly effective way to disinfect Potable Water, and can be dosed into the water as a chlorine gas (Cl2) or as a liquid (12.5% Sodium Hypo-Chlorite). The major advantage of chlorine is its residual disinfection effect; it ensures disinfection right up to the point of end use. When water is stored for extended periods, the residual level of free chlorine should be monitored, and topped up as required.

UV sterilisation instantly kills bacteria, parasites and viruses by passing the water past an Ultra Violet light source, which damages the DNA of these organisms. UV sterilisers should be installed as close as possible to the point of end use, as the effect of a UV steriliser is only temporary - the water may become re-contaminated when stored in tanks or even in pipe work downstream of a UV steriliser.

Applications

There are various applications for water treatment across a range of industries, some of which include:

  • Desalination/Reverse Osmosis (RO) of sea water for drinking water
  • Purification of bore/brackish water for drinking water
  • Treatment of waste water streams for re-use
  • Demineralisation/purification of scheme water for use in high purity applications such as:
    • Boilers
    • Laundry equipment
    • Hotel kitchen appliances eg: steamers, dishwashers etc.
    • Cooling towers
    • Disinfection systems (hospitals)
Supply of Consumables & Water Treatment Equipment

MAK stocks a wide range of consumables and parts for water treatment. We maintain a supply of most commonly used parts in stock to limit down time for plant and equipment, including:

  • Water treatment chemicals
  • Filters
  • Membranes for sea and brackish water RO units
  • UV Sterilizers
Plant Audits & Training

MAK can assist in providing training to plant operators, maintenance and engineering personnel. Our engineering and technical support team expertly manage and monitor your water treatment project, providing exceptional client service and delivering outstanding results.

Our team of skilled engineers can provide plant reviews to understand how your existing plant is operating and provide assistance in improving operating efficiencies.

24 Hour Engineering & Technical Support

MAK offer 24 hour technical support and remote monitoring to ensure consistent and reliable water supply.

MAK can have a crew ready to mobilise to site by road or air, within 12 hours of receiving a call.

Automatic Remote Monitoring (telemetry) can be included in the design of any equipment, which can then be monitored to ensure plant efficiency is maintained.

Total Solutions Engineering

MAK will design, build and install a water treatment system to your specifications. Simply supply the following information:

  • Required water flow
  • Required water quality (drinking water or other)
  • Quality of feed water
All MAK water treatment equipment is thoroughly tested in our workshop, so when it arrives on site it is ready to operate.
