Background

Water is a limited and precious resource anywhere west and inland of the Great Dividing Range. Acknowledging this scarcity and importance, the ACT Government initiated a Healthy Waterways Program to capture and reuse stormwater runoff for irrigation water to offset potable water use. The program aims to capture and retain stormwater in a new artificial wetland providing a habitat for local and migrating bird species and serving as a community focal point.

MAK Water was approached by a wetland management consultant to consider compliance with Australian Recycled Water Guidelines and to assist with a pragmatic and fit for purpose design to polish the captured stormwater from the wetlands. The design required sufficient filtration and disinfection for low-risk irrigation of public parklands.

Solution

A Multimedia Filter (MMF) was used to treat up to 240 m3/day of clarified stormwater water in a shipping container suitable for installation in an unrestricted open public space.
