Wastewater Treatment for Campground

A tropical island resort on Great Keppel Island, within the Great Barrier Reef, required an upgrade to its ageing sewage treatment infrastructure. The existing system presented a risk to achieving sensitive environmental discharge targets. The location is a Category C cyclone rating island, meaning that the treatment plant needed to be designed for this challenging environment. Non-compliance could affect public health, damage the surrounding environment and negatively impact tourism, making a reliable, fit-for-purpose wastewater treatment solution essential.

Pennant Hills Golf Club (PHGC) required an additional, reliable water source to support golf course operations after several years of low rainfall and limitations on supply from the local water authority. A previous project harvesting water from an underground sewer line had increased available supply, but it was still insufficient. The next available source was polished wastewater from the NorthConnex (NCX) water treatment plant that was otherwise discharged to Blue Gum Creek. This advanced wastewater treatment plant was designed, constructed, installed and commissioned by MAK Water in 2020. MAK Water was commissioned to design, construct and deliver a customised water off-take project that would transfer the treated water from the NCX site, beneath the roadway and into the PHGC site.

An accommodation and wellness centre engaged with the local council and agreed to improve the quality of the water spent from their hot springs prior to discharge into the environment. To meet the stringent log reduction parameters for water treatment, a process solution incorporating a containerised Multimedia Filter (MMF) with validated UV disinfection was implemented. MAK Water worked with the client to understand their concerns regarding rainfall ingress and installed a cost effective integrated manual change over line to allow the client to perform a rainwater first flush. The solution enabled the client to meet their sustainability goals and local council requirements. This is the second plant that has installed MAK Water for similar applications for this client as it works to reduce its environmental footprint. The containerised plant reduces install time, removes the need for additional shelters and improves the longevity of the plant in harsh operating conditions.

A remote campground required portable water in accordance with ADWG from a river source to service the increase in visitors to the park. The plant needed to provide safe and reliable potable water, handle fluctuations in river water quality, have built in redundancy, be fully automated and require minimal operator input, and have remote monitoring capabilities. MAK Water was selected through a tender process, based on meeting all the specifications for design, manufacturing, installation, commissioning, support and routine maintenance.

An owner and operator of premium yacht marinas in required a new treatment system to treat the waste stream from the marina hardstand at one of their new premier sites in Sydney. The waste stream comprised general wash down water from vessels during servicing and hull cleaning processes. The site has access to a sewer for trade waste discharge, so treatment system was required to enable treated wastewater to be discharged to sewer for minimal costs. MAK Water was engaged to design and deliver a solution.

For over 15 years MAK Water has, maintained and serviced a Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant that for the largest off-grid tourism location in the Northern Territory supplying up to 5,000 staff and tourists drinking water. We were asked to provide a solution to lower the Permeate Conductivity and Feed water pressures. MAK Water provided design and application advice on using hot water while carrying out routine CIP cleans. The concept was accepted, and we fabricated a 5m3 stainless steel tank to suit the pipework on site without any significant changes to the site layout.
